An apparently emotionally disturbed man was shot and killed by police in the Bronx as he held a large knife to his mom’s throat, police and sources said.
The police-involved shooting occurred shortly before 11:20 a.m. Saturday inside an apartment on the 13th floor of 2865 Creston Ave, near Minerva Place in Bedford Park, police officials said.
Responding cops were met by a screaming 19-year-old family member “with apparent slice wounds” to her face, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said during an afternoon news conference.
When police entered the apartment, they found the 30-year-old suspect holding his mother in a front headlock, pressing a “large carving knife” to her throat, said Chell, who added, “she was clearly injured and bleeding.”
The man ignored “numerous” demands to drop the weapon before one of the officers fired a single shot, hitting the unhinged man in the head, Chell said.
The entire incident was caught on the officer’s body cam, Chell noted.
The disturbed man had been “off his meds,” on drugs and was hallucinating, according to a family member, sources said.
“The whole night I heard the dog howling. I know she [mother] didn’t like dogs,” neighbor Alex Montgomery told The Post. “The son was screaming at his mother, ‘Give me the keys to the closet, give me the keys to the closet.'”
The suspect had been “going through mood swings. He was acting up all night,” said James Watson, a friend of the mother’s husband. “They said he was wilding out. When the police got off the elevator he really got out of control. He didn’t recognize who the cops were.”
The suspect was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The officers “showed great composure and save the life of a 45-year-old mother,” the chief said.
“This morning, two of our officers responded to a family’s call for help, which they responded to quickly,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said during a news conference. “They were met with a chaotic, fast-moving situation where they showed great composure and saved the life of a 45-year-old mother.”
“Today was a complete tragedy during this holiday season. Thank God our cops got here quickly and saved the family from further harm,” Chell said.
The officers each have just over two years on the job, the Chief said.
