Arbi Baghalian- 42-Year-Old Charged In Edward Bronstein Death

The charges filed against Arbi Baghalian, a 42-year-old nurse, and seven California Highway Patrol officers for involuntary manslaughter and assault have once again brought to light the issue of Police accountability and the excessive use of force.

The incident occurred on March 31, 2020, when the California Highway Patrol pulled over Edward for a suspected DUI. After being taken into custody, Bronstein repeatedly said, I can’t breathe, as officers attempted to take a blood sample.

Six officers are accused of forcing Bronstein to the ground, handcuffing, and pinning him down by pressing their knees on his legs and neck while blood was drawn. Despite Bronstein’s repeated pleas for help, the officers continued restraining him.

CPR was attempted more than 13 minutes after he became unresponsive. Bronstein was later pronounced dead.

The charges brought against Baghalian and the officers resulted from a thorough review of the incident, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón.

Gascón stated that the officers had a legal duty to Bronstein, which they failed to fulfill. While Police officers are granted a certain degree of authority to use force in their line of duty, excessive use of force has become a pervasive issue.

Edward Bronstein Death Demands Police Accountability And Reform

This case and many others highlight the need for increased Police accountability and reform. The use of body cameras, like the footage released in Bronstein’s case, can be an essential tool in holding Police officers accountable for their actions.

However, as the footage of Bronstein’s death shows, it is not always enough to prevent excessive use of force. The officers continued to restrain Bronstein, despite his repeated pleas for help, even demanding that he stop yelling.

The charges against Baghalian, who was present to take a legal blood draw, have also sparked controversy. Baghalian’s employer has stated that it is irresponsible to charge a registered nurse with involuntary manslaughter for his duties.

While Baghalian’s role in Bronstein’s death may be less clear-cut than that of the officers, the fact remains that a man lost his life while in Police custody. It is the duty of all individuals involved in the incident to be held accountable for their actions.

Bronstein’s death came just two months before the killing of George Floyd, which sparked nationwide protests. However, despite widespread outrage and calls for change, instances of Police brutality continue to occur.

The issue of Police accountability is complex, with no easy solutions. However, increased transparency, accountability, and training in de-escalation techniques and bias awareness may be a step in the right direction.
