The Pietasters Concert at 9:30 Club
Third-wave ska was a staple of alt-rock radio and venue stages in the ’90s. While its popularity waned, the sound is now revived by contemporary acts like the Interrupters, Jeff Rosenstock, We Are The Union and Jer. The well-dressed men of the scene never really went away. The Pietasters of D.C. skanked their way into teenage memories when their jubilant “Out All Night” became a video game soundtrack staple. While they have not released an album in years, their annual holiday celebration continues with Jersey punks Crazy & The Brains. 7 p.m. $25.
Tis the Season for Techno at Owl Room
Last week, the owners of the Owl Room, the dance club in the 14th Street building formerly occupied by Marvin, announced that the venue would close at the end of the year. It was both a surprise and disappointment, as the Owl Room, which opened in March had become a pseudo replacement for the much missed U Street Music Hall, bringing in talented, experienced DJs to take listeners on a voyage under the swirling lights of a disco ball. But send the place out with a bang: On Friday, veteran drum and bass crews assemble in the bar for a birthday party for Ken Lazee, the general manager at Owl Room and U Hall, whose long résumé includes opening for Roni Size, Goldie and LTJ Bukem. Lazee is on the decks with fellow veteran Slant. Upstairs, “Tis the Season for Techno” with a cast including B_X_R_N_X_R_D and Stukes. 10 p.m. $11.33.
