The “Bushwick Birkin” is getting its own waiting list — just like its fancier cousin Hermès.
Telfar is making its constantly sold out “Shopping Bag” — the It bag seen all over Brooklyn’s hip neighborhood — easier to buy online.
With an online shopping event on Wednesday, the brand is launching its Bag Security Program, during which shoppers can pre-order the coveted bag in “any size, any color, any quantities.” For 24 hours beginning at midnight on Aug. 19, fans can pre-pay for “guaranteed delivery” of the hot bag by no later than Jan. 15, 2021.
Telfar’s 24-hour buying window is in response to the hype and backlash from shoppers, who have long complained about the bag selling out instantly every time there’s a new supply drop. Earlier in August, the Shopping Bag sold out in minutes, much to the dismay of Twitter users hoping to hop on the trend.
“We are not about hype and scarcity,” wrote Telfar. “We didn’t set out to make an impossible to get product. The whole point of our bag is accessibility and community.”
Launched in 2014 by Telfar Clemens, the genderless label’s Shopping Bag is available in three sizes with accessible price points (ranging from $150 to $257) and has been regularly sold out since it debuted.
Celebrities, such as Solange and Selena Gomez, are fans of the coveted carryall, and it developed a cult-like status among followers of the brand over the past few years. Many young creatives living in Bushwick, where the black-owned brand is based, are ready and eager to buy into the Telfar philosophy simply described as “Not for you — for everyone.” The hype, which spawned its nickname after the impossible-to-get Hermès Birkin, was helped by resale sites, including eBay and StockX, where the bags were available to buy at marked-up prices in the $700 and higher range.
And — rightfully so — its cachet isn’t fading anytime soon thanks to this Bag Security Program.
